Halloween is approaching, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t share all the things we love about this creative and creepy holiday. It also just so happens to be, owner and lead designer jenny’s favorite day of the year.  That said, now is the perfect time to begin brainstorming your home’s transformation from everyday design to spooky and stylish. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween party or just want to embrace the spirit of the season, there are countless ways to bring all the fabulousness into your home. We thought we’d explore some creative ideas for Halloween that blend the fun, the frightening, and the festive.

Pick a theme:

Before diving into decorating, it helps to choose a theme. This will give your Halloween setup a cohesive look. Although Jenny prefers a nod to the macabre, and all things scary, we know that many of you are team “plaid pumpkin” so it’s fine to do whatever you love.  Here are a few ideas:

Classic Halloween: Think pumpkins, skeletons, black cats, ghosts, and bats.

Haunted House: Old, cobweb-covered furniture, flickering candles, and creepy portraits on the walls.

Gothic Elegance: Black lace, rich velvet, and deep colors create a sophisticated but scary vibe.

Harvest Festival: Incorporate natural elements like pumpkins, hay bales, corn husks, flowers, and earthy tones for a more subtle autumn look.

Lighting:

Lighting is key to setting the mood for Halloween. Opt for dim, warm lighting with an ominous touch.

String lights: Orange, white, and even purple string lights add a soft, mystical glow to your space. Drape them over windows, mantles, and doorways or wind them into your table design.

Candles and Lanterns: Place candles everywhere you can; inside lanterns, on tables, or in carved pumpkins to create shadows. Use flickering taper candles in vintage candle holders.  LED candles are a safe alternative to real flames, especially if you have pets or children. We love the flickering LED’s that are made from real wax.

Projectors: The choices for Halloween projections are vast. Use light projectors that display ghostly figures or eerie scenes on your walls or the exterior of your house. With a simple google search you can find dozens, and even DIY options.

DIY Decorations: Adding homemade elements can make your Halloween décor even more unique.

Spider Webs: Create faux spider webs using stretched cotton or pre-made synthetic webs. Drape them across furniture, mirrors, and staircases, then add plastic spiders for an extra special touch.

Pumpkin Carving: Whether it’s the traditional jack-o-lantern or intricately carved designs, pumpkins are a Halloween staple. Get creative with different shapes, sizes, and colors of pumpkins.

Wreaths and Crafts: Craft a wreath for your front door. Use black faux flowers, small skeletons, or bats to bring a Halloween twist to the classic wreath.

Table Settings: If you’re hosting a dinner or party, don’t forget to set the mood at the dining table.

Black and Creepy Palette: Use black tablecloths and festive napkins for a bold Halloween look.

Gothic Glassware: Dark, ornate glassware and plates add a spooky elegance to your dinner party.

Spooky Centerpiece: Create a centerpiece using a faux skull, cobwebs, or black candles. Surround it with smaller elements like mini pumpkins, spiders, flowers, or autumn leaves for a fuller look.

Outdoor Décor: Set the stage for trick-or-treaters and visitors with outdoor decorations.

Graveyard: Create a DIY graveyard on your lawn with fake tombstones. Add skeleton arms emerging from the ground to make it extra awesome.

Creepy Entrance: Nothing says Halloween like a full-size Michael Meyers’ or Ghost woman on your porch, but you can also hang skeletons at the front door to give your guests a fright as they enter. A fog machine will add extra ambiance too.

Pumpkin Pathway: Line your walkway with glowing jack-o-lanterns to guide guests to your door. Mix real and faux pumpkins for variety.

Music & Sound Effects
Enhance the atmosphere with the right sounds.

Soundtracks: Play ambient Halloween music or horror movie soundtracks to set the tone.
Invest in a sound machine that plays ghostly howls, creaking doors, or wind noises to send chills down your guests’ spines.

Halloween Treats:
It’s not Halloween without some themed treats! Incorporate frightful snacks and drinks into your décor.

Candy Corn Centerpieces: Fill glass jars with candy corn or Halloween-colored candies to add a pop of color to your table.

Themed Cupcakes: Decorate cupcakes with spider webs, eyeballs, blood, bats, or witches’ hats. Arrange them on a tiered stand for a striking display. Top your cakes with skeletons, or you can do a day of the dead look as well.

Pumpkin Punch Bowl: Use a hollowed-out pumpkin as a punch bowl for an extra festive touch. Fill it with apple cider or a spooky cocktail for guests. Another idea is to create a signature cocktail for your guests. It is extra creative and so much fun to add a dot of dry ice so your cocktails smoke like a witch’s brew.

Halloween design is all about blending spooky elements with creativity. Whether you prefer a haunted house, a gothic mansion, or a happy pumpkin patch, you can transform your home into a place full of Halloween holiday charm. Don’t be afraid to mix textures, play with lighting, and add personal DIY touches.  Here are a few videos to get the creative juices flowing.  Oh, and don’t forget to dress the part!!

We can’t wait to see what you create.

Happy Haunting!
