Refreshing Your Home for Summer: Easy Updates for the Season of Sunshine
There’s something magical about summer—the longer days, the warm breezes, the scent of something sizzling on the grill. It’s a season meant for slowing down, embracing the outdoors, and letting your home reflect that relaxed feeling. Whether you’re entertaining on a screened porch or just soaking up the quiet of a summer morning, a few intentional updates can make your space feel like a seasonal retreat.
Here are a few of our favorite ways to refresh a home for summer: Let’s get started!!
Lighten Up the Layers
As we come out of our very rainy Spring, we are ready for light, and lovely. That said, step one is to swap out those heavy textiles for lighter ones—cotton or linen throws, gauzy curtains, and breathable bedding. Think soft whites, airy blues, light florals, or sandy neutrals. These small swaps create a subtle but powerful shift in mood. They also keep you cool on those summer nights when the windows are open, and the warm breeze is blowing.
Create an Indoor-Outdoor Flow
Summer is the season for porches, patios, and backyard gatherings. Make sure your transition from inside to out feels seamless. Style your screened porch like a true room—with comfortable seating, layered rugs, cozy throw pillows, and ambient lighting (lanterns or Edison lights work wonders). Keep a tray or bar cart handy for iced drinks and snacks, and you’re set for the golden hour.
Bring in Natural Elements
Celebrate the outdoors by bringing nature in. Think cut branches in oversized vases, fresh herbs in the kitchen or in flower arrangements, or woven textures scattered about. Even something as simple as a bowl of lemons or farm fresh veggies in an old biscuit bowl, can bring instant life to a room. We love freshly cut flowers in baskets, brass, or vintage blue and white as well.
Make Room for Relaxation
It is time for everyone to slow down so designate little corners of your home for those moments—maybe it’s a cozy reading chair near a window or a breezy hammock outside. Summer is made for afternoon naps and moments with your feet up, so make sure your home has space for that slower rhythm.
Set the Stage for Summer Cooking
Whether it’s grilling outside or tossing together a salad in your kitchen, summer food is all about ease and freshness. Head to the farmers market and pick up everything that you need to create simple and delicious meals. Clear the clutter from your counters, stock up on your favorite fruits, berries, and herbs, and keep your grilling tools within reach. It makes for the best and easiest meals of the season.
Celebrate the Water
Nothing says summer like being in or on the water. If you’re lucky enough to live near a lake, river, or coast—lean into that lifestyle with coastal touches: striped towels, breezy textiles, and nautical hues. For everyone else, even a simple kiddie pool, a backyard plunge, or a breezy blue palette indoors can evoke that same refreshing energy.
Let Summer Set the Tone
Summer isn’t about perfection—it’s about ease, joy, and gathering. A home that feels open, light, and inviting is the best backdrop for all of it. So, open the windows, (well until the raging heat begins) pour something cold and delicious, and let the season do its thing.
Welcome to summer. We love that you’re here!!
