The Magic of Hockey
- There’s no me, just we. Watch any NHL interview. Every player interviewed will tell you that he was only able to make magic because of some perfect pass from another player, or the team stepping up. He doesn’t say “I.” He always says,
“we.” - Hockey is played no matter what. No matter the injury. It is a sport. A job. Devoid of excuses. A team plays for each other, so they play hurt and bloody and only stop if a trainer drags or carries them off the ice.
- Hockey players protect each other. They are a family. If you mess with teammates, they are all willing to take a punch to the jaw, eye, or head to defend the team. They sacrifice for each other. I watched it this weekend in Iowa, 13- and 14-year-old kids on the ice, protecting my son in the net, both physically and emotionally. I watched it tonight when the Coyotes tried to rough up the Blues. If you mess with the we, you get the me.
- Hockey is never boring. The play is fast. The puck is even faster.
- Hockey is patriotic. Every NHL game I have ever been to has done something to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed to protect our freedoms.
- For me, hockey is nostalgic. It’s childhood, sitting on the sofa with my dad, watching some scratchy 80’s TV broadcast and listening to the plays. We went to the old arena sometimes and sat way up in the nose bleeds. I remember parking at the old Central Hardware and hoofing it up the giant hill to the arena entrance. As I got older, I would write every game in my work calendar and plan my client meetings around the TV schedule. Now, what gets me through the gloom of winter is watching the Kirkwood Stars and the St. Louis Blues. It’s what I have with my son. We watch, listen and talk hockey all the time. At 13, he will still sit practically on top of me when we watch the Blues. We talk goalies, and plays, and watch as much hockey as we can. It is special, and I love it.
