Soothing Shades of Grey

Soothing Shades of Grey

This was a difficult space to redesign as the old kitchen was cramped and blocked off from the old butler’s pantry. This made for a difficult kitchen to entertain guests in because it was sectioned off from the rest of the house and dark and cramped. The new design miraculously fit an island into the space. It took out walls, incorporated a new butler’s pantry and added in wider archway openings so the remodel looked like it was meant to be in the hundred-year-old home. A goal of the homeowners was to have a space that flowed for entertaining as they host guests in their home often. They like to have guests help in the kitchen and the island was a perfect addition for this goal. They also wanted it to feel highly functional, as functional as possible for every inch of the space. One of the results for the functionally driven design was the skinny spice pull-out wall cabinet discreetly designed to the left of the range hood wall cabinets. It’s a fan favorite. The corner wall garage cabinet hides their everyday appliances from sight, freeing the counters from clutter. They enjoy having their microwave hidden from plain sight in the base cabinet of their island, instead of in a wall cabinet or above the range. The butler’s pantry now feels like a beautiful piece of furniture, open to the kitchen, instead of in a closet as it used to feel. The range wall is one of the homeowner’s favorite design aspects because of the herringbone tile design across the whole wall. It makes for a cheerful wall that smiles back at her as she cooks away at the range. They had originally decided to pick light maple stained cabinets and left their comfort zone when their designer suggested painted cabinets instead. They took resale value into consideration and opted for a gray and cream painted cabinet color combination. The quartz countertops are ready to hold up against stains and scratches but also look beautiful in the marble and seaside patterns they chose. It turned out to be a soothing kitchen, designed on a budget but powerful in functionality and charm.
