With a long to-do list of projects around the house, the homeowners became overwhelmed and wanted to throw in the towel and move. After much convincing by their daughters, they decided on a complete remodel instead and called Karr Bick to help rescue them. When approaching Designer Wendy, the homeowners had clear insight on what they wanted. With Scandinavian family roots, the goal was to blend functionality and simplicity with natural beauty. Originally, the kitchen was dark and featured several hues of beige. After it’s transformation, this space feels like a breath of fresh air. The moonstone color blocked cabinets add a modern flair. The zellige backsplash, which wraps around the whole kitchen, provide interest and is complimented by dark features. Blonde wood shelving brings warmth to the kitchen but still rings true of the color theme. Lastly, inspired by the nature seen through the windows, an organic light fixture hangs above the breakfast table. Through these different design dynamics, the space has evolved to fit the feel and function the homeowners desired. The fireplace, which served as the centerpiece of their living room, was completely outdated. The goal was to make the fireplace seem like it was meant to […]
Read MoreIt has long been said that kitchens and baths are what sell a home. And, of course, it is true that we tend to want our kitchens and bathrooms to be stylish retreats that look great and function well with our daily routines. But in today’s busy world, it’s the “anywhere spaces” that will set your soul at ease and bring peace to often chaotic days. The closet: An obvious choice for an anywhere space. Not just a place to keep our things, our closets have turned into an oasis in and of themselves. Create extreme function and maximum beauty by bringing well-placed cabinetry and a luxurious island into your closet. A place for everything and everything in its place really does do wonders for the soul. The mudroom/laundry room: Perhaps a more fitting name for this room would be the “backpack” room or the “shoe” room. Without proper design, layout and storage, this room can be one of the most stress-inducing rooms in your home. Especially at around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon, when backpacks overflowing with paperwork and shoes strewn hastily, can destroy this space faster than they can say “I need a snack, I’m STARVING!” Tucking […]
Read MoreThe Skinny on Cabinets (Basic Construction & Styles) Kitchen cabinets are available in all shapes, sizes, colors, finishes, and construction levels. It can be confusing and hard to tell them apart. Why does one cabinet line cost more than another? Here is a description of basic cabinetry construction and style options as well as an initial sense of the factors that affect your bottom line. Framed Cabinet Construction: A framed cabinet is what we traditionally think of as kitchen cabinets in the United States. The box of the cabinet has a face frame that provides support. When you open the door there is a wood face frame outlining the front of the box to which hinges are attached. This frame provides a small lip all the way around the inside of the cabinet. The frame also helps keep the kitchen (or bathroom) cabinet square so that the doors hang level and the drawers function properly. Within a framed cabinet product line there are typically 3 types of door configurations: Standard overlay: The doors are slightly larger than the cabinet opening, showing the frame of the cabinet when the cabinets are screwed together in a line. This is the least expensive […]

What’s fueling the trend: Houzz and Pinterest have really opened up a portal to the fairy world of laundry rooms where the sky’s the limit and you can see spaces in which almost every bell and whistle has been explored. Once you’re exposed, you have to have it. The ideas and images get stuck in your mind and you start to think how wonderful such a mundane task could become. Popular styles: Sometimes elegant, other times whimsical or beachy, and oftentimes very efficient – a place where everything has a place and typically the entire space is very well thought out. You can explore your personality a bit more in this room becuase typically it’s just one family member running the show, unlike a kitchen or bath where you have to compromise. Bells and whistles: Fold-out ironing boards, special cubbies for laundry baskets, drying rack hideaways, pull-down dry cleaning rods, wrapping paper drawers, craft storage, hidden laundry units, folding stations, pull-out trash, specialty sinks, sewing centers, big screen TVs, dog food storage, the list goes on and on.
